Eye-catching posters designed by pupils to encourage people to keep the borough’s streets clean and green, are to grace the sides of Croydon’s super-capacity, solar-powered Bigbelly bins.
At last night’s cabinet meeting Cllr Stuart Collins, cabinet member for Clean & Green Croydon, announced the winners of the council’s poster competition, run as part of the council’s Don’t Mess With Croydon (DMWC) clean streets campaign.
Pupils from the four Croydon schools participating in Team London Young Ambassadors entered the competition, including The Minster Junior School and St Andrew’s High School, both in Warrington Road; Howard Primary School, Dering Road; and Meridian High School, Fairchildes Avenue.
At the meeting Cllr Collins presented the four winning designs (attached) from Chloe Okonne, a year 4 pupil at The Minster Junior School, and Alex Mowbray, year 4, Oliwia Wrorowska, year 5 and Naomi-Laura Segawa, year 6, all from Howard Primary School. These will be appearing on the borough’s BigBelly street bins. Cllr Collins also commended several other pupils for their efforts.
“The BigBelly bins are already a huge hit in Croydon, keeping our streets cleaner and helping people to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.
“I’m delighted that so many pupils took part in this competition, designing these fantastic posters which look great and encourage everyone to do their bit to keep our borough tidy. Young people are right at the heart of the next phase of Don’t Mess With Croydon – we want to build on the incredible pride that so many of them have in their borough and encourage them to get behind our campaign. Well done to all those who submitted designs – look out for the winners on a BigBelly near you very soon.”

Also at the meeting, Cllr Collins unveiled designs from a schools competition organised by Steve Reed, MP for Croydon North, in which pupils were asked to design clean and green posters for use on Veolia vehicles. Among those that participated were Rockmount Primary School, Rockmount Road; All Saints Primary School, Upper Beulah Hill; Winterbourne Junior Girls School and Winterbourne Boys Acadamy, both in Winterbourne Road.
