Street champions lead by example on World Clean-Up Day

Street Champions working with Croydon Council’s Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride campaign hosted a series of community events across the borough to mark World Clean-Up Day.

The dedicated volunteers collected more than 56 bags of litter across the six sessions.

Croydon’s 390 Street Champions organise hundreds of clean-ups across Croydon throughout the year, with the council helping provide equipment and collect the waste afterwards.

On World Clean-Up Day (Saturday 21 September) there were four Street Champion events at Thornton Heath Recreation Ground, South Norwood Recreation Ground, Park Hill and Shirley Heath.

Graham Mitchell helped organise the Thornton Heath Recreation Ground clean-up, which saw 22 volunteers come together and included clearing Norbury Brook.

He said: “I’ve been involved as a formal Street Champion for three years. I decided to get involved when I saw one going on and then I started to organise them.

“I just found it came naturally and I thought I would do my bit. I think a lot of people doing little things makes big changes.”

There were also clear-ups of Leslie Park and Oval Road and Pixton Way on Sunday 22 September.

“Our Street Champions do a fantastic job organising hundreds of clean-ups to improve their communities throughout the year.

“World Clean-Up day is an excellent global initiative and I’m glad our Street Champions helped celebrate it in Croydon.”

Councillor Stuart Collins, deputy leader – Clean Green Croydon
