Young Mayor urges young people to ‘seize the day’

Croydon’s Young Mayor and Deputy have urged young people to ‘seize the day’ and make a difference by applying for a share of the Young Mayor’s Fund to benefit other young people in their community.

With just days to the deadline (Sunday 5 August), they have issued a call to action for young people to submit their initial applications for a share of the £20,000  pot. See the video here.

Selected applicants will then be invited to pitch proposals for short-term projects, celebrations, trips and equipment to the Young Mayor’s Fund panel, in the style of the BBC Two series Dragon’s Den, where budding entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to the panel of five multi-millionaires to persuade them to invest.

The ‘dragons’ – Young Mayor William Awomoyi, Deputy Young Mayor Shea Williams and youth cabinet members – will decide whether to allocate a grant of up to £1,000.

William said: “We want to hear from as many of Croydon’s young people as possible. This is a great opportunity to make your vision for your community become a reality. I know the young people in Croydon have fantastic ideas so my message to them is – seize the day!”

Applicants must be aged 8-18 and live, work or go to school in Croydon. They must have an adult sponsor, such as a company, charity or community organisation, who are registered with the Charities Commission and/or Companies House and have a business bank account. Groups can apply for up to £1,000, twice a year.

The panel is particularly looking to fund activities and projects that address the priorities set out by Croydon’s youth congress and also the election manifesto of the Young Mayor and Deputy. These include helping young people to feel safe, and providing young people with opportunities for training and development.

Completed forms must be returned to youngmayor@croydon.gov.uk by no later than 17.00 on Sunday 5 August 2018. Selected applicants will be invited to pitch their idea to the Young Mayor on the week commencing Monday 20 August 2018 to stake their claim to the funding.

Projects should be planned to be carried out and completed in autumn 2018 and delivered in the borough of Croydon.
