Young Mayor’s Fund launches ‘Dragon’s Den’ pitching process

Young people in Croydon can apply to make their ideas and projects become reality by pitching to the new Young Mayor’s Fund panel, Dragon’s Den-style.

Selected applicants will have the opportunity to present proposals that could benefit other young people in Croydon to the ‘dragons’ – Croydon Young Mayor William Awomoyi, his deputy Shea Williams and youth cabinet members. The Young Mayor and his panel will then decide whether to allocate a grant from the £20,000 Young Mayor’s Fund. They could win up to £1,000 to fund short-term projects, celebrations, trips and equipment.

Applicants must be aged 8-18 and live, work or go to school in Croydon. They must have an adult sponsor, such as a company, charity or community organisation, who are registered with the Charities Commission and/or Companies House and have a business bank account. Groups can apply for up to £1,000, twice a year.

The panel is particularly looking to fund activities and projects that address the priorities set out by Croydon’s youth congress and also the election manifesto of the Young Mayor and deputy. These include helping young people to feel safe, and providing young people with opportunities for training and development.

William Awomoyi, who was elected as Croydon’s first Young Mayor in March, said: “I’m delighted to launch Croydon’s first ever Young Mayor’s Fund. I believe young people in Croydon have potential, they have talent and they have great ideas. If you believe your plan could make a difference to young people in our borough, then stake your claim – my panel and I look forward to hearing your pitch.”

“Through the Young Mayor’s Fund we are offering young people the chance to gain valuable skills and experiences, from pitching their ideas to then seeing them through to delivery. We can also look forward to a fantastic programme of initiatives led by young people, for young people and I can’t wait to see them.”

Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning
