Plans to invest in maintaining Croydon’s roads, pavements, bridges, drains, signs and lampposts for the year ahead has been agreed by Cabinet.
The £14.5 million maintenance plan outlines how the Council will improve the borough’s network of transport assets which includes 726 kilometres of carriageways, 1,235 kilometres of footways, 62 highway-maintained structures and bridges.
The development of the works programme is informed by data and information from highways inspections, residents, businesses, residents associations and councillors.
This information ranks projects in line with Department for Transport guidance and prioritises what is needed most. The Council also prioritises fixes to issues that residents have reported through Love Clean Streets.
The Council’s approach includes plans for longer-term solutions ensuring better value for money for residents.
Flood prevention works are also included in the spend with the Council investing in additional inspections, cleaning and technology to monitor gullies and drains in flooding hotspots across the borough. The highway maintenance programme is funded by the Council’s capital fund, TfL and the Department for Transport.
“Croydon’s highway network is one of the Council’s most valuable assets. It’s essential that we use the funding available to maintain it in the best way we can, improving roads and pavements that need it most and getting value for money for our residents.
“We have listened to residents and have used their feedback to help us identify the areas that need improving. We encourage everyone to continue to report issues on the highway to us through Love Clean Streets.”
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
