Get ready to support Dementia Action Week, 13-19 May

Lots of fun and informative events are taking place in Croydon during this year’s Dementia Action Week, from 13-19 May, to help raise awareness and support people living with the condition.

The wide-ranging events include opportunities to touch rare objects at the Museum of Croydon to transport people back in time, a chance to watch a movie in a dementia-friendly setting, with the lights on, at The David Lean Cinema, and free one-hour online dementia friends sessions.

Croydon’s Dementia Action Alliance (CDAA) has organised the week-long activities with the Alzheimer’s Society – the UK’s leading dementia charity, as part of the borough’s work to deliver the actions in Croydon’s Dementia Strategy.

The CDAA works in partnership with Croydon Council to make the borough inclusive for more than 3,500 local people estimated to be living with dementia, and ensuring their families and carers get appropriate information and support.

Everyone is welcome to attend the events throughout the week to learn more about how to create dementia-friendly communities. The CDAA is hoping that as many people as possible with the condition can attend and have fun taking part in the activities.

“I am really pleased to work in partnership with Croydon’s Dementia Action Alliance to put on these great inclusive events during Dementia Action Week. We are a dementia-friendly borough, and we will continue making improvements to meet the needs of people living with the condition and support those who care and look after them.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon

Susan Underhill, programmes director at Age UK Croydon, said: “Dementia Action Week is a great opportunity for everyone in Croydon to come together and socialise, take part in activities and have fun in relaxed environments while learning about the condition. We are pleased to be making good progress with delivering the promises made in our Dementia Strategy and supporting residents to live more fulfilling and healthier lives.”
