Waste and recycling collections stay the same – have a sustainable Christmas!

Waste and recycling collections in Croydon will stay the same over the festive period as Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a weekend this year.

Residents should put their bins out on their usual days. If you need a reminder of when your collection days are, you can find them on the council’s new online collection calendar. Residents (except those with communal bins) can also download a copy of their collection schedule.

During the festive period we encourage everyone to reduce their waste, and reuse and recycle as much as possible. To find out what you can and can’t recycle, visit our recycling page.

If you’ve opted for a real Christmas tree, we are offering a free collection service for recycling. Just leave your tree out from 10 January 2022 and it will be collected at some point over the next fortnight. If you prefer, you can also take your tree to your nearest household waste and recycling centre.

Love food, hate waste has some great tips for making the most of festive food and minimising your waste. Anything you really can’t use up should go in your food caddy for food waste collection.

At this time of year, some of us will be getting new appliances and devices, but that doesn’t mean old ones need to end up at landfill. If you have older electronics, homeware, toys, sports equipment and even musical instruments, think about taking them to your local Waste and Recycling Centre where they can potentially be refurbished before ending up at our Community Reuse Shop in New Addington.

“I want to wish all of our residents a merry Christmas – and to encourage all of us to think about how we can celebrate it sustainably. From reducing our food waste by getting creative with leftovers, to giving and wrapping greener gifts, there are lots of little choices we can all make that together, make a big difference. We’re taking important action to tackle climate change as your council and as a community – let’s keep it up over Christmas.”
