Croydon has set out how it will respond to the challenges of the national housing crisis and the global climate emergency, planning for future development to meet local needs in a way that is sustainable.
More than 3,050 responses submitted by 881 individuals and groups of residents have helped shape the updates to Croydon’s Local Plan 2018, which has been reviewed to meet the borough’s housing target of approximately 42,000 new homes by 2039 as well as the need for urgent action on climate change.
Proposed changes to the Plan include details on three areas for transformation – Purley Way; East Croydon Station and its surrounding area; and North End Quarter, Croydon – and how they can be developed to help deliver much-needed new homes, jobs and community facilities.
The Draft Plan, which is due to be adopted in 2023, will be considered by the council’s cabinet on 6 December.

If the Draft Plan is approved at cabinet, the council will launch a further six-week consultation in the New Year to get further feedback on the proposed changes.
This phase of the consultation will provide the local community, businesses and other interested stakeholders with the opportunity to comment on the policy content of the Draft Local Plan, within a specific remit. The remit for public consultation relates to the ‘Tests of Soundness’ and also includes legal compliance, as set out in National Planning Policy Framework.
The Plan will then be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate / Secretary of State for examination in the spring.
