Croydon Council has begun charging for collection of bulky household waste items from homes.
Household bulky waste includes large or unwanted household items such as furniture that cannot be re-used or recycled. From today (Friday 9 October), residents can book collections at the following costs:
– £31 for one to three items.
– £51 for four to six items.
The council will continue to offer this service year-round. Residents can find more information, including which items can be collected, and book a slot at www.croydon.gov.uk/bulkywaste.
All bookings that were made for free household bulky waste collections prior to Thursday 8 October will be honoured and residents will be able to change and amend these bookings at no cost. However, if a white good – such as a washing machine or fridge-freezer – is added to an existing order, the system will treat this as a new order and residents will be charged £31 for the addition.
The proposal to begin charging for household bulky waste collections was among the amendments to the 2020/21 budget approved by Full Council on 28 September. Most other London boroughs already charge for this service.
There are other alternatives for the collection of household bulky waste items in the borough and the council will continue to promote these to residents as part of its commitment to sustainability and the Don’t Mess With Croydon campaign. The council encourages everyone to dispose of their waste responsibly and always consider whether items could be reused, repaired or recycled first.
