A message from Councillor Hamida Ali, leader of the council

We’ve taken two important steps towards a greener Croydon this week with the launch of our Carbon Neutral Action Plan, and approval of our strategy to protect and renew our beautiful 127 parks and green spaces.

Since declaring a climate emergency, Croydon has taken a huge range of local actions to reduce carbon emissions – from making it easier and safer for people to leave the car at home, to encouraging everyone to reduce and recycle their waste. You can find out more on our sustainability webpages.

There are so many little things we can all do to make Croydon greener – in the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more about what we’re doing to achieve our climate action goals, and how you can help.

Celebrating Race Equality Week

This week we’ve been celebrating national Race Equality Week with Croydon Council chosen as one of the ‘spotlight’ organisations.

We are committed to making Croydon an actively anti-racist council with a workforce which reflects and respects the community we serve. From our recently agreed George Floyd Race Matters and Equality pledges to our new cabinet advisory board on equality, diversity and inclusion the council is taking steps to ensure equality is at the heart of what we do.

That’s why we’re supporting Race Equality Week and their #MyNameIs campaign which promotes steps to reduce cultural stigma and mispronunciation by including phonetic name spellings in email signatures. It may seem like a small step but it’s an important and valuable way to celebrate the importance of heritage and identity, by respecting one another’s names.

Schools out!

Investing in our 93,000 young people has always been a priority for Croydon and this half-term, we and our partners are offering some fantastic free activities and opportunities while school is out.

We know how important it is to provide our young people with safe spaces, like Legacy Youth Zone, where they can learn new skills, build their confidence and meet positive role models. In doing so, we’re supporting them to make positive choices, stay safe and well, and achieve the incredible potential that all Croydon’s young people have.

We’ve also provided children at Croydon schools, in receipt of free school meals, with vouchers for the half-term, to help relieve the pressure that too many families experience during the holidays.

I’d like to wish all our children, young people and families, and our school staff, a great half-term – enjoy the activities, enjoy our stunning parks and open spaces, and most importantly, have a well-deserved rest.
